Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for Indians to choose domestic destinations for travel and events has created a significant economic opportunity for India’s tourism and hospitality industries. The Hotel Association of India (HAI) views this initiative as a chance for India to become a top global destination for various types of tourism, potentially enhancing foreign exchange reserves and creating employment opportunities.
The HAI emphasizes that the push for domestic tourism could lead to substantial investments in hotels, resorts, convention centers, and tourism infrastructure, benefiting both urban and rural areas. K.B. Kachru, President of the HAI, believes that inbound tourism will be a key factor in the growth of India’s hospitality sector in the future, positioning the country as a competitive tourism hotspot with top-notch infrastructure and experiences.
India’s positive image as a stable democracy with rich cultural diversity and improving infrastructure is increasingly attractive to international travelers amidst global uncertainties, according to the HAI. The association predicts that a boost in inbound tourism could significantly increase India’s foreign exchange earnings through various tourism-related expenditures, potentially raising earnings by 25 to 30 percent in the coming years.
Industry experts anticipate that the rise in domestic tourism demand will drive investments in different segments of the hospitality industry, including mid-market, premium, and luxury accommodations, heritage sites, religious tourism circuits, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) infrastructure. They believe that this growth could attract foreign capital, expertise, and technology partnerships, leading to broader benefits across various sectors and the creation of sustainable jobs.
The HAI underscores the importance of streamlined approvals, consistent regulations, and targeted incentives to fully unlock the growth potential of the hospitality sector under India’s ‘Vision 2047’ roadmap.
