Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the UAE on Friday underscores India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Gulf nation amidst the West Asian crisis. The visit is set to address defense cooperation, energy security, maritime stability, and trade resilience in the face of escalating regional tensions and risks to global supply chains, as reported by the Khaleej Times.

During the visit, PM Modi will engage in high-level discussions with UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to enhance their strategic partnership. The timing of the visit holds significance due to the heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Gulf region, stemming from the US-Iran confrontation, threats to shipping lanes, and concerns of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts anticipate that the talks will prioritize ensuring reliable energy access and strengthening defense coordination to safeguard India’s economy and trade routes from the repercussions of regional instability. Energy cooperation is expected to take center stage in economic deliberations, encompassing long-term LNG contracts, crude supply assurances, upstream investments, and alternative logistics arrangements to counter potential Gulf disruptions.

The UAE stands as one of India’s key energy partners, supplying crude oil, LPG, and LNG, while also accommodating significant Indian investments in strategic petroleum reserves and upstream projects. The burgeoning defense ties between the two nations are poised to advance with discussions on a Strategic Defence Partnership framework, covering defense manufacturing, cybersecurity, maritime security, intelligence-sharing, counter-terrorism cooperation, and special operations.

India’s strategic interests are further bolstered by the UAE’s pivotal geographic location, offering India a crucial foothold near vital global energy and shipping routes amid escalating competition for influence in West Asia. The visit symbolizes the broader evolution of India-UAE relations over the past decade, transitioning from a transactional oil-for-remittances dynamic to a comprehensive strategic partnership spanning various sectors.

The UAE has emerged as India’s third-largest trading partner and a significant source of foreign direct investment, reflecting the deepening economic collaboration between the two nations. Additionally, the Indian diaspora in the UAE, comprising over 4.5 million individuals, plays a pivotal role in bridging the economies through remittances, business activities, and professional contributions, underscoring the importance of diaspora welfare and labor protections in the bilateral discussions.
