Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra praised the unity of the Opposition for thwarting the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at providing 33% reservation for women in Parliament. The Bill, which also sought to increase the House’s strength, failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority, sparking a political clash between the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Priyanka Gandhi described the defeat of the Bill as a significant triumph for democracy. She emphasized that the government’s alleged plot to alter the federal structure and undermine democracy was effectively countered. The Opposition’s solidarity was evident, she noted, contrasting with the ruling party’s reactions.
Priyanka Gandhi criticized the government’s intentions, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah’s speeches in the Lok Sabha. She accused them of using the Bill as a tool to retain power permanently, expressing shock at the timing of the Special Session during ongoing Assembly elections. The Congress leader emphasized the need for genuine empowerment of women, urging the government to prioritize women’s rights without misleading them.
Referring to recent events and economic challenges faced by the public, Priyanka Gandhi suggested a shift in the government’s approach. She pointed out the increasing burden on women due to rising prices of essential commodities and questioned the government’s credibility, especially regarding women’s issues. Priyanka Gandhi criticized the government’s tactics in introducing the Bill, alleging that it was a ploy for political gain rather than a sincere effort for women’s empowerment.
