Congress Screening Committee Chairperson and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to visit Assam for a two-day trip in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections. She will kick off her visit with prayers at the Kamakhya Temple and then head to the Rajiv Bhawan, the headquarters of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Scheduled meetings related to candidate screening will occupy her time from 11 a.m. till late night.
The visit announcement was made during a press conference led by AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi. Priyanka will lead the Screening Committee in engaging with Block Congress leaders, organizational representatives, and grassroots party members for the candidate selection process. This structured screening exercise is a first for the State, with plans for Priyanka to return multiple times ahead of the elections to assess public sentiment and enhance organizational alignment.
Gogoi mentioned that the party aims to swiftly complete the screening process, hinting at a potential release of the initial Congress candidates’ list by the end of February after consultations with central leadership. He emphasized the party’s readiness for the polls and ongoing discussions about forming alliances with compatible Opposition parties.
In a direct critique of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi questioned his credibility to speak on “Hindu leadership” due to allegations involving land and cattle syndicates. He also highlighted recent political events concerning senior leaders, alleging attempts to divert attention from issues like the reported 12,000 bighas of land associated with the Chief Minister’s family.
