People advocating for the establishment of Jharkhand state protested in Ranchi to emphasize their unmet demands. Organized by the Jharkhand Andolankari Sangharsh Morcha, protesters aimed to march to the Chief Minister’s residence but were halted by police near Sido-Kanhu Park, leading to a sit-in on the road. The demonstrators, who originated from Morabadi Ground with drums and traditional music, seek acknowledgment, fair pensions, compensation, and employment opportunities for their families.
Alleging prolonged neglect by the government, protesters, including Morcha’s Principal Secretary Pushkar Mahto, highlighted the unaddressed grievances of those who fought for Jharkhand’s formation. Despite significant sacrifices and contributions to the statehood movement, activists feel overlooked even 25 years post Jharkhand’s establishment. Tensions arose between protesters and police during the demonstration, with activists underscoring their demand for recognition and honor rather than special treatment.
Accusations of hindrances faced by individuals en route to Ranchi and some detentions were made by protest leaders, though official responses from the administration are pending. In a show of escalation, 17 protesters have initiated an indefinite hunger strike, warning of further protests if their concerns remain unattended. Emphasizing the symbolic significance of Jharkhand’s creation, activists stress the urgency of addressing their legitimate demands arising from the state’s historical struggle.
