Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana met in Chandigarh to discuss the long-standing Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal water sharing issue. Both leaders expressed optimism, agreeing to frequent officer-level meetings to address the matter outside of Supreme Court dates. The dialogue was described as positive, with a commitment to resolving the dispute.
The meeting, lasting around 30 minutes, aimed to continue the constructive discussions on the SYL canal matter. Officials from both states, including Haryana Irrigation Minister Shruti Choudhry and Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal, were present. The next step involves secretary-level discussions within the next fortnight to progress the resolution process.
In previous talks, Punjab CM Mann suggested utilizing Chenab river water to settle the water dispute with Haryana, emphasizing the need for new infrastructure. The SYL canal issue, a contentious topic since the 1980s, has seen recent positive developments in discussions between the two states. Both Chief Ministers expressed satisfaction with the recent progress and pledged to work towards a mutually agreeable solution.
