Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon has expressed worry to the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer about illegal activities by certain government officials and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Dhillon highlighted that officials are collecting data on state government welfare schemes under the guise of electoral roll revision, which goes against the Election Commission’s objectives. The BJP has called for corrective action to be taken.
The party pointed out that some BLOs are asking tenant voters for unauthorized documents like registered rent agreements or affidavits from landlords, despite these not being required by the Election Commission’s guidelines. This unnecessary demand is causing inconvenience to voters and complicating the electoral process. The BJP has demanded an immediate inquiry and strict disciplinary measures against officials involved in such activities.
Additionally, the BJP has requested the Election Commission to issue clear instructions to District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and BLOs to only request documents specified by the rules from voters. Dhillon stressed the importance of conducting the electoral roll revision process fairly, transparently, and in a manner that is friendly to voters and completed within a set timeframe to uphold public interest and the credibility of the electoral process.
