Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann secured a confidence motion in a special Assembly session following the defection of seven Rajya Sabha MPs. He emphasized the enduring public trust in the 117-member House, stating that the Aam Aadmi Party’s support base remains strong and anticipates a larger mandate in 2027. Chief Minister Mann highlighted the party’s grassroots foundation and its firm alignment with AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
The Chief Minister criticized the Congress’ absence in the House as indirect support and questioned the BJP’s organizational strength. He announced Punjab’s intention to approach the President for stricter anti-defection measures or a recall mechanism, signaling a broader constitutional initiative. Asserting AAP’s resilience against defections, he stressed the party’s unbreakable bond with the people’s trust and raised concerns about the misuse of institutions like the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI.
During the session, 88 AAP MLAs were present, with two abroad, two in jail, and two hospitalized. The confidence motion received unanimous backing, showcasing the government’s unity and vigor. Chief Minister Mann denounced attempts to destabilize the government through misinformation, reaffirming the people’s unwavering support for Punjab.
The Chief Minister criticized the Opposition’s internal discord, highlighting their disarray and power struggles. In contrast, he praised AAP’s unity and collective efforts for Punjab’s progress. He mentioned the passage of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2026, as a point of contention for the Opposition, preventing their divisive agenda. Expressing concerns about the democratic climate, Chief Minister Mann condemned the erosion of democratic norms and misuse of central agencies, calling it a disrespect to Babasaheb Ambedkar and democracy.
