Amid internal discord in the Punjab Congress, senior leader Partap Bajwa emphasized the need for discipline before the 2027 assembly polls. Party’s Punjab affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel stated that the Congress remained the primary choice for the people. However, notable Congress figures like former Chief Minister Charanjit Channi were absent from a crucial meeting called by Baghel in Chandigarh.
To maintain a balanced approach, Leader of the Opposition Partap Bajwa highlighted that Baghel’s presence was significant regardless of others’ choices. He mentioned that Channi’s absence did not imply a departure from the party. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Channi and his supporters are expected to address their concerns to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, in Delhi.
During his five-day visit to Chandigarh, Baghel aimed to reconcile differences within the party leadership. He held discussions with various party officials, expressing confidence in the party’s readiness for the upcoming challenges. Baghel emphasized the disillusionment of Punjab residents with the Aam Aadmi Party and the lack of credibility of other opposition parties like Akali Dal and BJP, reaffirming people’s trust in the Congress.
Baghel stressed the importance of meeting public expectations and uniting party members towards victory in the 2027 assembly elections. He acknowledged the pivotal role of District Congress Committee presidents as intermediaries between the party and the public, assuring them of increased empowerment. Moving forward, Baghel planned to engage with senior leaders, office-bearers, and party workers to strengthen the party’s position in Punjab.
Sukhwinder Singh Danny and Raj Kumar Verka assumed their roles as working presidents of the Punjab Congress Committee, with Baghel attending the installation of the new Punjab Youth Congress president, Shuvam Devgan. Verka expressed solidarity with Channi, emphasizing their commitment to the Congress and its leadership under Rahul Gandhi, Kharge, and Baghel. Baghel also convened meetings with various party leaders, signaling efforts to consolidate support and streamline party operations.
