The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is intensifying its fight against drug abuse through the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign. Specially-designated e-rickshaws are being deployed at the grassroots level across 86 Assembly segments in the state. These e-rickshaws are part of a pilot project aimed at mobilizing communities against drug abuse.
As part of the initiative, one e-rickshaw is designated to cover 40 villages in selected Assembly segments to raise awareness about drugs and gather anonymous tips on drug peddlers and individuals in need of de-addiction. The campaign has already reached 3,440 villages in Punjab, delivering anti-drug messages and information on rehabilitation options to remote areas.
The e-rickshaws are crucial in reaching out to communities that are typically hard to access through traditional methods. They travel from village to village, not only spreading awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse but also educating people on available support for rehabilitation. This effort aligns with the government’s strategy to engage local communities in combating drug abuse.
Village Defence Committees (VDCs) established at the grassroots level play a significant role in monitoring the effectiveness of the anti-drug program and providing feedback to the government. Members of these committees have reported positive responses to the campaign following the introduction of e-rickshaws. The feedback received will be reviewed in meetings scheduled throughout June to assess the progress of the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign.
Feedback from these meetings will be used to evaluate the campaign’s impact at the village level and address any emerging concerns related to drug abuse. The government has set up a review mechanism that includes engaging with local MLAs, government officials, and VDC members to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the program’s effectiveness. The initiative aims to create a sustainable anti-drug movement in Punjab, with a focus on community participation and support.
