The Punjab government has implemented a significant change in how textbooks are distributed to students in private schools. Starting this academic year, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will directly provide books to all students from Class I to XII in PSEB-affiliated private schools, breaking the monopoly of authorized agencies and bookstores. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains emphasized that this decision aims to enhance transparency, lower costs for families, and ensure timely access to textbooks without relying on middlemen.
The minister stated that schools must adhere to a pricing policy where they cannot charge more than the discounted printed bill price. Schools will only facilitate the distribution process without making any profits. This initiative is expected to benefit over 10 lakh students in private schools. Previously, a 15% discount given to book sellers will now directly benefit students, reducing financial burdens on families and enhancing accountability in the education system.
To streamline the process, the PSEB has introduced a dedicated e-commerce portal. Students can request textbooks through a mobile app or the online portal, with schools digitally uploading class-specific and subject-specific requirements. Each student will receive unique login details, allowing parents to place orders directly if necessary. The system includes a secure online payment gateway to ensure transparent and efficient transactions, eliminating any chance of overcharging and maintaining transparency at every stage.
PSEB Chairman Amarpal Singh mentioned that regional offices will prepare textbook bundles based on received orders for timely distribution to schools and students. Schools will need to confirm in writing that they will not impose any additional charges beyond the discounted price, ensuring strict compliance with the new policy.
