Punjab Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal oversaw the ongoing relining work of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal to ensure timely completion. The canal, serving various Punjab villages and towns, has suffered significant deterioration due to its age. The project aims to prevent potential damage caused by breaches in the canal’s structure.
The reconstruction of the Sirhind Feeder Canal has already been finished at a cost of Rs 800 crore. Once the relining of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal is done, it will protect nearby areas from risks to life and property. Additionally, the project will enhance the supply of canal water for agricultural purposes.
Responding to demands from local farmers in Faridkot, a 12.50-km section of the Rajasthan Feeder near Faridkot city will be lined with bricks for groundwater recharge. Upon completion, the canal will operate at its full capacity, ensuring Rajasthan receives its allocated water share. This initiative not only strengthens the irrigation system but also contributes to public safety and groundwater conservation.
The relining work on 80 km of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal was completed by 2023. Due to canal closure unavailability, the remaining 16.62-km stretch is now being relined urgently at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 170 crore.
