A former Head Constable of Punjab Police has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by a Special CBI Court in Mohali for his involvement in the abduction of a man in Tarn Taran district back in 1991. The convict, Kashmir Singh, was also fined Rs. 10,000 by the court. The case was registered by the CBI in 2006 following a High Court order in response to a petition filed by the victim’s wife.
The abduction incident, which took place on August 7, 1991, involved Kashmir Singh and other police officials detaining the victim, Baljit Singh, at a police station for about 10 days before denying any knowledge of his whereabouts. After a thorough investigation, charges were filed against the accused in 2007. Subsequently, in 2023, three other co-accused were also convicted and sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine.
Kashmir Singh, who had been on the run since the trial, was declared a Proclaimed Offender in 2010 but was finally arrested by the CBI in 2025. Following the framing of charges in 2026, the Special CBI Court recently found him guilty of conspiracy and abduction, leading to his five-year imprisonment.
