Punjab Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat announced a significant development in the horticulture sector, with an anticipated investment of around Rs 1,300 crore. This initiative aims to enhance farmers’ earnings, create new avenues for value addition, and boost exports. Drawing inspiration from Maharashtra’s successful horticulture model, Punjab seeks to empower its farmers through organized farming practices, efficient processing, and improved market connections.

A crucial step in this endeavor was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sahyadri Farmers Producer Company Ltd from Nashik, Maharashtra. This partnership is geared towards strengthening Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in Punjab by providing training and institutional support. The delegation’s visit to Nashik proved insightful, showcasing how collaborative efforts through FPOs can enhance production, grading, packaging, processing, and global exports.

Sahyadri’s impactful work with numerous farmers across vast acreage, exporting produce to 42 countries, exemplifies the potential for collective prosperity among farmers. The delegation’s firsthand experience at modern packhouses, processing units, and training centers emphasized the importance of scientific crop planning, quality control, and robust market ties. These elements are pivotal for Punjab’s farmers to leverage for improved productivity and market competitiveness.

Emphasizing the significance of the pact, Minister Bhagat highlighted its role in fostering strong farmer groups in Punjab. Through provisions of training, technology support, and guidance, the agreement aims to empower farmers to collectively enhance their produce prices. The state government’s unwavering commitment to promoting horticulture, enhancing value addition, and ensuring sustainable income sources underscores Punjab’s potential to emerge as a prominent horticulture hub nationwide.
