Punjab is moving towards crop diversification and sustainable agriculture with the establishment of a basmati centre of excellence during the Chief Minister’s visit to the Netherlands. This initiative aims to boost farmers’ incomes and reduce dependence on the wheat-paddy cycle, according to an official statement. CM Mann emphasized the need to shift away from the wheat-paddy cycle to protect the state’s land and water resources.
During his visit, CM Mann explored agricultural best practices and industry insights to benefit farmers who have been crucial in ensuring the country’s food self-sufficiency. LT Foods, during the visit, expressed its commitment to sustainable farming practices and expanding Punjab’s basmati market globally. The company agreed to set up a basmati centre of excellence in Punjab, focusing on low-pesticide cultivation and assured procurement.
CM Mann stressed the importance of aligning with international standards for sustainable farming, including reducing pesticide use to promote basmati rice in the global market. He also called for increased collaboration between Dutch companies and Punjab Agricultural University for research and sustainable agriculture practices. Highlighting the economic challenges in farming, CM Mann invited global investors, particularly Dutch firms, to participate in upcoming agri-tech and industrial platforms in Punjab.
