Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, criticized the killing of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee in Asansol, West Bengal. Chatterjee was reportedly attacked and killed on April 24 by individuals associated with the Trinamool Congress following the state’s Assembly elections. Gandhi expressed condolences to Chatterjee’s family and accused the TMC of instilling fear and violence in West Bengal.
In a social media post, Rahul Gandhi denounced the violence, emphasizing that Congress has always advocated for non-violence and constitutional values. He demanded swift action against the perpetrators, calling for their immediate arrest, severe punishment, and ensuring security and compensation for Chatterjee’s family. Gandhi affirmed that Congress stands against the use of violence in politics and vowed to seek justice for the victim.
The Congress party highlighted the close association of Debdeep Chatterjee with the Congress candidate in Asansol North, Prasenjit Puitandi. Alleging that Chatterjee was targeted by individuals linked to the ruling TMC, the party criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal. The incident, occurring shortly after the elections, raised concerns about political intimidation and violence against opposition members, according to the Bengal unit of Congress.
The Congress party expressed dismay over the lack of immediate action, noting the absence of a filed FIR and attributing it to administrative negligence. Emphasizing the importance of a democratic environment free from fear and violence, the Indian National Congress vowed to continue advocating for justice and speaking out against such acts of violence.
