After climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was hospitalized by Delhi Police due to his declining health following a 20-day hunger strike, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and a Congress leader, strongly criticized the BJP-led Central government. Gandhi accused the government of promoting falsehoods and violence, stating that the removal of Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar during his peaceful hunger strike was unjust. He emphasized the importance of addressing issues like paper leaks, education costs, and student suicides for India’s future.
Congress leader Pawan Khera and other opposition figures, including Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, and Sanjay Raut, also condemned the police’s actions against Wangchuk. Banerjee expressed concern over the neglect of Wangchuk’s voice and the voices of numerous young Indians. Khera highlighted the right to dissent guaranteed by the Constitution, criticizing the Home Ministry for attempting to suppress it.
Sharad Pawar noted the government’s silence despite growing protests and criticized its inaction. Sanjay Raut described Delhi Police’s actions as authoritarian and a tactic to divert attention from protests in Maharashtra.
