Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, greeted as “Thalaiva (leader)” by party supporters, arrived in Tamil Nadu for a school’s golden jubilee celebration in Gudalur. While the visit is said to be non-political, there are rumors of the Congress aiming to strengthen its position in the state before the upcoming elections. Rahul Gandhi is expected to engage with students and locals during his visit.
The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) showcased support for Rahul Gandhi at the airport, portraying him as a “supreme leader.” This public demonstration coincides with the Congress’s push for a more significant role in the state government, a move opposed by its main ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Reports also suggest the Congress is exploring ties with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to enhance its political influence.
Tensions have escalated between the Congress and DMK, with the former seeking a substantial number of seats in the upcoming Assembly elections. However, the DMK has rejected this demand, emphasizing a tradition of single-party governance in Tamil Nadu. Despite the Congress’s aspirations for a coalition government, the DMK remains steadfast in its stance.
Rahul Gandhi is set to meet local party officials to strategize the Congress’s electoral plans moving forward.
