Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding accountability for the alleged assault on students who were peacefully protesting in Delhi on July 20. Gandhi expressed concern over the use of excessive force by security personnel against the students who were advocating for a fair and accountable education system. He highlighted the use of lethal weapons, tear gas, and pellet guns during the protest, leading to serious injuries among the demonstrators.

In his letter to the Home Minister, Gandhi raised questions regarding the approval of the use of force, including pellet guns, against the protesting students. He sought clarification on who authorized such actions and the identity of individuals in plain clothes who were seen assaulting students with lathis. Emphasizing the significance of democratic rights, Gandhi stated that peaceful protests are essential in a democracy and called for the protection of protesters and resolution of their grievances through dialogue.

Earlier, the Centre for Justice and Peace (CJP) called off its protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar after the government accepted its key demands following certain developments. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda announced the withdrawal of all police cases against the protesting students, written confirmation of FIR withdrawals, and ensuring maximum compensation for families of students involved in incidents linked to the alleged paper leak controversy. CJP leaders, satisfied with the government’s assurances, urged protesters to end the agitation and return home.
