As central trade unions announce nationwide protests against the government’s labor and economic policies, Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, has expressed his solidarity with the workers and farmers. Gandhi highlighted concerns that the four labor codes could diminish workers’ rights and that the India-US trade agreement might negatively impact farmers’ livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) as a crucial support system for villages.
Farmer unions, organized under the SKM banner, have raised objections to the interim India-US trade framework, labeling it a direct threat to Indian agriculture and rural livelihoods. These unions are planning demonstrations across the country, culminating in a general strike to protest against the perceived threats posed by the trade agreement. The unions are particularly critical of the government’s stance on agriculture and dairy in trade negotiations, urging for protection of domestic farmers and rural workers from potential adverse consequences.
In Tamil Nadu, disruptions in banking, public services, and transport operations are expected as trade unions join a nationwide general strike. This strike, supported by 10 central trade unions and various organizations, aims to oppose key labor reforms and policy decisions. The demands include the withdrawal of the new labor codes, amendments to the Electricity Act, ensuring a five-day work week for bank employees, and condemning changes to the rural employment guarantee scheme. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also extended its support for the Bharat Bandh, emphasizing the importance of self-respect, justice, and the rights of workers and farmers.
