Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is set to arrive in Chennai on May 10 for the swearing-in ceremony of C. Joseph Vijay as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Scheduled to land at 8:40 a.m., heavy security measures have been implemented in key areas of the city in anticipation of his visit and the significant political event. The swearing-in ceremony of Vijay is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, where Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will administer the oath of office.
Several prominent national and regional political figures, along with film personalities and party supporters, are expected to be present at the ceremony. Following the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s emergence as the largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, various parties extended their support to help them surpass the majority threshold in the 234-member Assembly. Despite falling short of a simple majority independently, the Indian National Congress and other parties pledged their support to Vijay’s leadership.
Backed by alliance partners and supporting parties, the TVK-led coalition has garnered the backing of 120 Members of the Legislative Assembly, comfortably exceeding the 118 majority mark required to establish the government in Tamil Nadu. Governor Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the government after receiving letters of support from the alliance partners at the Raj Bhavan. Vijay is expected to take the oath alongside a few Cabinet members, with the full ministry likely to be expanded later. Political analysts perceive Vijay’s ascension as a significant political event in Tamil Nadu, marking the commencement of his first term as Chief Minister amidst heightened public and political interest across the state.
