Rainfall in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry has provided relief to residents following days of intense summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul over the next two days. Chennai witnessed a sudden change in weather with areas like Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, and Koyambedu experiencing showers, lowering temperatures and creating a cooler atmosphere.
Neighbouring districts like Tiruvallur and areas such as Thirupachur and Pandur also saw rainfall. Waterlogging was reported on the Chennai-Tirupati highway, while Chengalpattu district and Krishnagiri district experienced widespread rainfall in various localities. Puducherry also received rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in areas like Lawspet and Muthialpet.
Despite the rain, some areas continued to face intense heat. Tiruttani recorded temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, along with high temperatures in Chennai Meenambakkam, Nungambakkam, Vellore, Erode, Madurai Airport, and Tiruchy. The Meteorological Department has noted an upper-air cyclonic circulation over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and a trough extending from the Lakshadweep area to south coastal Andhra Pradesh, likely leading to heavy rainfall in western Tamil Nadu.
Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy skies with hot and humid conditions persisting.
