The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata has predicted continuous rain in south Bengal, including Kolkata, for the next seven days. Simultaneously, heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for north Bengal. The monsoon axis stretching from Haryana to Manipur and an active cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh are contributing to the weather conditions.
A senior official from the Meteorological Centre mentioned that a trough extending from Bihar to Manipur, coupled with the cyclonic circulation, is causing a significant influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern is expected to result in ongoing rain and thunderstorms across both north and south Bengal.
In Kolkata, scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms is forecasted to persist until Tuesday, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph. Similar weather conditions are expected in various districts like North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Jhargram, and Purulia, while heavy rain is anticipated in Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman, and Murshidabad districts on Monday.
The forecast indicates an increase in rainfall activity in south Bengal starting Thursday, with heavy rain expected in Howrah and North 24 Parganas districts. Additionally, continuous heavy rain warnings have been issued for several districts from Thursday to Saturday, including South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura.
In north Bengal, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar on Sunday and Monday. The remaining districts are also expected to experience heavy rainfall, continuing until Tuesday. Moreover, Kalimpong and Alipurduar districts may face heavy rain next Friday and Saturday.
The minimum temperature in Kolkata on Sunday morning was recorded at 28.4 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the city on Saturday was 32.1 degrees Celsius, slightly below normal.
