Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra criticized the BJP-led state government for its handling of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Dotasra accused the government of using public consultations to push the BJP-RSS agenda and divert attention from governance issues rather than seeking genuine public input.
Speaking at a press conference in Rajasthan, Dotasra questioned the government’s decision to initiate public hearings on the UCC without providing a draft or defining the scope of the consultations. He alleged that the process was designed to create social divisions instead of addressing the real concerns of the people.
Dotasra raised concerns about the composition of the committee overseeing the UCC examination, noting its strong association with the RSS. He also criticized the appointment of retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to lead similar committees in multiple states, suggesting a centralized approach would have been more appropriate.
The Congress leader accused the BJP of using emotive issues to evade accountability on governance matters. He highlighted the lack of public consultations on pressing issues such as water scarcity, power supply, crime rates, road conditions, farmers’ problems, healthcare deficiencies, unemployment, and inflation.
Referring to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s leadership, Dotasra alleged that the Chief Minister was more focused on Delhi than on addressing the state’s challenges. He further criticized the government’s performance in agriculture, infrastructure, and public services, claiming that the BJP had not fulfilled its commitments to farmers and youth.
Dotasra escalated his criticism by accusing the BJP of undermining democratic institutions and constitutional values. He claimed that the BJP’s actions aimed to alter constitutional safeguards, weaken federalism, suppress dissent, and undermine reservations and secularism, moving the country towards authoritarianism.
The State Congress President also condemned the BJP for allegedly destabilizing elected governments and misusing constitutional bodies for political purposes. He vowed that the Congress would vehemently oppose what he termed the BJP’s “divisive and anti-Constitutional agenda” while advocating for governance, public welfare, and democratic rights.
