Amid concerns over women’s postpartum health issues, the Rajasthan government is launching the ‘Prasav Sakhi’ (Birthing Companion) program in state-run hospitals. This initiative, endorsed by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, aims to offer specialized assistance and coordinated care to high-risk pregnant women. The program, set to roll out gradually in medical college-affiliated hospitals, district hospitals, and First Referral Units, will assign a trained female health worker to each high-risk pregnant woman for personalized support.

Under the new system, these designated healthcare companions, identified by their pink aprons, will accompany pregnant women throughout their hospital stay, assisting with registration, tests, consultations, treatment, and postnatal care. The initiative also includes the establishment of round-the-clock Maternal and Child Health Help Desks in designated hospitals, serving as the primary point of contact for pregnant women and their families. The Prasav Sakhis at these help desks will provide information on hospital services, tests, and treatment procedures, ensuring a seamless healthcare experience for patients.

To enhance the overall support system, the state government plans to integrate the 104 Janani Express ambulance service, Maternal and Child Health Help Desks, and the Prasav Sakhi program into a unified network. This integrated approach aims to facilitate safe transportation for high-risk pregnant women to healthcare facilities and ensure continuous assistance throughout their treatment, prioritizing their needs in transportation, admission, and medical care.
