Rajasthan and Haryana have signed a Memorandum of Agreement in New Delhi for the long-pending Yamuna Water Project, marking a significant breakthrough after 32 years. The project, with an estimated investment of Rs 34,102 crore, aims to enhance water management in Rajasthan and provide drinking water security to water-scarce regions.
The agreement signing ceremony was attended by key officials including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Chief Minister Sharma highlighted the project’s importance in fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for water security and praised the collaborative efforts between the states.
Chief Minister Sharma credited the successful resolution of the project to the strong political will, effective coordination, and timely decision-making under PM Modi’s leadership. The project involves transporting Rajasthan’s allocated share of Yamuna water through an underground pipeline network spanning approximately 295.5 kilometers, benefiting both Rajasthan and Haryana.
The Yamuna Water Project, designed to provide water to ten locations in Haryana as well, includes the construction of underground pipelines, reservoirs, and a modern water management system. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named the Rajasthan-Haryana Yamuna Water Project SPV (RHYW-SPV) will oversee the project’s implementation, construction, operation, and maintenance.
