Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a cutting-edge Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) facility at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) of the DRDO in Visakhapatnam. This facility is poised to significantly boost India’s naval research and testing capabilities, a crucial stride towards achieving technological self-reliance. Singh emphasized that this initiative will empower India to domestically design, develop, and test its equipment, systems, and sub-systems, positioning the country as a formidable naval power and a leader in defense technology.
The Defence Minister highlighted that previously, despite successful development of equipment, India often had to rely on foreign testing facilities. With the new facility, this reliance is set to change. Singh underscored that the LCT facility is not just an infrastructure project but a pivotal system that will enhance propulsion systems, facilitate noise reduction efforts, and bolster stealth capabilities. He emphasized its role as a foundational support for submarine and ship design and development, driving advancements in naval engineering and maritime defense systems.
Singh lauded the project as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). He connected the government’s commitment to self-reliance with national security, noting India’s achievements in various sectors through collaborative efforts of the industry, academia, MSMEs, youth, and researchers. During his visit, the Defence Minister was briefed on NSTL projects by Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO. He also witnessed advanced underwater systems at the Seakeeping and Manoeuvring Basin, including torpedoes, naval mines, decoys, and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
Singh observed a live demonstration of man-portable AUVs, showcasing India’s advancements in autonomous maritime operations and underwater warfare technologies. This display underscored the nation’s focus on future-ready defense systems. Additionally, he inspected spin-off technologies developed by the Naval Systems Materials cluster labs post Operation Sindoor, highlighting India’s progress in defense innovation.
