Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, amidst the controversy surrounding AR Rahman allegedly taking credit for Sukhwinder Singh’s work on the song Jai Ho, praised Rahman as a kind individual. Varma emphasized that he was misquoted in the interview and stated that Rahman is a talented composer and a genuinely good person.
AR Rahman has been in the spotlight recently after mentioning a slowdown in his work in Bollywood due to what he described as a “power shift” and “communal” politics in the industry. Varma, in an old interview that resurfaced online, claimed that Rahman was not the original creator of the Oscar-winning song Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire, alleging that it was initially composed by Sukhwinder Singh.
In the interview clip, Varma recounted an incident from the film Yuvraj, alleging that Rahman had taken the tune from Sukhwinder Singh during a studio session and later sold the song, which eventually became Jai Ho. Varma also claimed that Sukhwinder received Rs. 5 lakh as compensation through Rahman’s management.
Addressing the controversy over his “communal” remarks, AR Rahman posted a video message on social media clarifying that he did not intend to offend anyone and expressing regret if his words had caused any hurt.
