Maverick director Ram Gopal Varma commended Curry Barker’s cost-effective supernatural psychological horror movie “Obsession,” labeling it a wake-up call for an industry fixated on stars, remakes, and extravagant productions. Varma emphasized the importance of psychological precision and emotional depth in cinema over lavish budgets. “Obsession,” produced for $75,000, showcases the potential of focusing on quality rather than scale in filmmaking. Varma highlighted Barker’s innovative direction, describing it as deceptively simple yet powerful in trapping viewers within characters’ perspectives through unique editing techniques.

The film’s confined settings and intense editing create an immersive experience, building tension and engaging audiences on a visceral level. Varma praised Barker’s approach of externalizing internal conflicts, transforming pulp into a resonant exploration of loneliness and desire. He underscored the film’s lessons on the impact of directorial vision, editing, and sound design in storytelling, contrasting it with excessive reliance on CGI and massive budgets in contemporary cinema. Varma emphasized the need for filmmakers to prioritize creative aspects over financial constraints for greater artistic impact.

Varma hailed “Obsession” as a reminder of cinema’s potential to evoke emotions through psychological depth, contrasting it with the industry’s trend of risk aversion and spectacle-driven productions. The film’s narrative, centered on a supernatural toy’s unintended consequences, serves as a cautionary tale about the price of fulfilling desires. Varma concluded by lauding Barker’s focus on quality over scale, urging the industry to prioritize substance in filmmaking endeavors.
