Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma expressed his deep emotions after watching the biography of Michael Jackson, titled “Michael.” Varma revealed his intense dislike for the film, as it reminded him of the tragic day when news of the King of Pop’s death broke on June 25, 2009.
Varma vividly recounted the moment he woke up to the shocking headline “Michael Jackson is Dead” on his TV screen. The filmmaker described the profound impact of Jackson’s iconic music video “Thriller,” which he experienced during his college days in Vijayawada back in 1984.
Reflecting on Jackson’s unparalleled talent, Varma described him as a “supernatural entity” who mesmerized audiences with his extraordinary performances. The filmmaker credited Jackson’s music videos, such as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” and “Smooth Criminal,” for shaping his own cinematic sensibilities.
Varma admitted that despite Jackson’s controversies, the music legend’s artistry and influence far outweighed any negative publicity. He expressed a mix of admiration and resentment towards Jackson for shattering the fantasy that Varma had built around him over the years.
