Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) expressed gratitude to the authorities and the state government for the successful conduct of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 opener at their home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, against Sunrisers Hyderabad. This match marked a significant return to the stadium after a tragic incident on June 4, 2025, where eleven lives were lost in a stampede during celebrations for RCB’s maiden IPL title win. RCB specifically thanked various entities including the Karnataka State Government, Bengaluru City Police, and others for their support in ensuring a smooth event.
The team emphasized its commitment to fan safety, stating that their focus throughout the season will be on ensuring the well-being of their supporters. Before the match, players, officials, and fans observed a minute of silence in memory of the eleven supporters who lost their lives in the previous year’s stampede. Both teams paid respects by wearing black armbands, and RCB players warmed up in jerseys featuring the number 11, symbolizing the lives lost. Additionally, 11 seats in the stadium have been permanently reserved in honor of those who died.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) also paid tribute to the fans by unveiling a memorial plaque at the venue’s entrance in memory of the eleven supporters. This match marked the return of top-flight cricket to the ground for the first time since May 2025. In the sporting aspect, Sunrisers Hyderabad set a formidable target of 201 runs, led by Ishan Kishan’s impressive 80 off 35 balls. However, RCB successfully chased down the total in 15.4 overs, securing a 6-wicket victory with strong performances from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal.
