Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid has finalized the acquisition of French defender Ibrahima Konate on a four-year contract, bolstering their squad for the upcoming season. Konate, aged 27, will officially join Real Madrid at the end of June, departing Liverpool as a free agent following the conclusion of his contract at Anfield.
This marks Real Madrid’s third signing for the summer transfer window, following the additions of Spain left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva. These players are anticipated to have significant roles as Real Madrid readies for the new season under the guidance of head coach Jose Mourinho.
Real Madrid confirmed the agreement with Konate, stating, “Real Madrid C. F. and Ibrahima Konaté have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030,” in an official statement.
The French defender’s move to Madrid comes after a successful five-year spell with Liverpool, where he emerged as one of the Premier League’s most dependable centre-backs after joining from RB Leipzig in 2021. Konate played a crucial part in Liverpool’s achievements, including securing the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season under manager Arne Slot, along with winning two League Cups and an FA Cup during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.
Konate, who made 183 appearances for Liverpool across various competitions, holds the record for the highest number of appearances by a French-born player in the club’s history. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk was instrumental in forming one of the league’s strongest defensive duos.
Notably, Konate was a key figure in Liverpool’s journey to the 2022 UEFA Champions League final, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Real Madrid. Currently representing France at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Konate was an unused substitute in their 3-1 victory over Senegal in the tournament opener. He is expected to link up with Real Madrid post the completion of his international duties.
