The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu until May 12, with heavy showers anticipated in various western and southern districts in the upcoming days. An atmospheric circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and nearby regions is expected to trigger intense rain activity throughout the state. Districts such as Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Dindigul are likely to experience heavy rainfall due to the prevailing weather conditions.
The RMC has issued alerts for 11 districts where heavy rain is expected in the coming days. Western districts, especially the hilly and ghat areas, may witness intermittent spells of moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari districts are also forecasted to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days.
Southern parts of Tamil Nadu are set to observe thunderstorm activity during this period. The RMC’s extended forecast indicates a likelihood of heavy rain in Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, and Theni districts from Friday to Monday. Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas are advised to stay cautious as continuous rainfall may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in certain regions.
Apart from the western belt, numerous delta and southern coastal districts are expected to receive widespread rainfall. Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi districts are likely to witness strong spells of rain between Friday and Monday. Meanwhile, Chennai and its suburbs are likely to witness thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in isolated areas over the next few days.
Weather officials suggest that cloudy conditions will prevail in the city, offering relief from recent heat and humidity. The Meteorological Department advises fishermen and the public to closely monitor official weather updates and exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
