The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore has issued an orange alert for rain in six south Bengal districts from Tuesday to Friday. A red alert has been issued for north Bengal until Monday. Heavy rain is expected in the south Bengal districts and Kolkata on Tuesday and Wednesday, while light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely in Kolkata later on Sunday and Monday.
The weather department has warned of potential landslides in hill areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, with the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas. The MET office has also cautioned that the water level of hill rivers may rise above the danger level due to heavy rains. An official from RMC mentioned the monsoon axis from Rajasthan to Bihar, bringing in a significant amount of water vapor from the Bay of Bengal, leading to heavy rain in the south and very heavy rain in the north.
An orange alert for rain with thunderstorms has been issued for Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, West Burdwan, Birbhum, and Murshidabad districts. There is a likelihood of storms with speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour in these areas. The remaining districts may also experience rain with thunderstorms, with Kolkata expecting partly cloudy skies in the coming days and a chance of light to moderate rain with thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday.
Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts could receive up to 200 mm of rain. North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts are under an orange alert for rain.
