An influential Republican Congressman has expressed concerns about the current state of US immigration policy, stating that it has reached a critical juncture. Congressman Glenn Grothman from Wisconsin emphasized the significance of immigration as the most pressing issue facing Congress and the White House. He highlighted that the way immigration is managed will have a profound impact on the future character of America.

Grothman pointed out that the scale of immigration, both legal and illegal, is larger than commonly perceived by the public. He noted that approximately 800,000 individuals are naturalized in the US each year, a fact that he believes is not adequately discussed. Additionally, he highlighted other significant pathways into the country, such as work visas and student visas, through which around 500,000 people enter annually.

The Congressman also criticized the application of birthright citizenship, arguing that the interpretation of the law regarding children born to foreign visitors needs reconsideration. He raised concerns about the misinterpretation of the Constitution, particularly in cases where children born to foreign nationals in the US are automatically granted citizenship.

Grothman underscored that current immigration policies have led to historically high levels of immigration in the US. He noted that over 15% of the US population consists of foreign-born individuals, a record high. He emphasized the need for limits on immigration, stating that the number of naturalized citizens has significantly increased compared to previous decades.
