Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, suggesting that Mamdani might do something “stupid” that would warrant being sent to the Guantánamo Bay detention facility. Tuberville, a conservative from Alabama, made these remarks during an interview while condemning Mamdani, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party known for his democratic socialist views.

Tuberville expressed disbelief that Mamdani, a relatively recent immigrant, had garnered enough support to lead New York City. He warned that Mamdani’s actions could lead to his removal and detention, emphasizing that Mamdani’s alleged disdain for the country could result in his transfer to Gitmo.

The senator accused Mamdani of attempting to alter the fundamental principles of the United States, asserting that such changes would not be tolerated. Tuberville’s comments were prompted by criticism from conservative commentator Benny Johnson regarding Mamdani’s stance on immigration, foreign policy, and recent political decisions.

Tuberville’s previous public statements have targeted Mamdani, including controversial remarks linking the mayor’s Ramadan event to the 9/11 attacks. This led to backlash, with California Governor Gavin Newsom denouncing Tuberville as “a racist piece of s—”. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, gained national attention by defeating Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor.

The rise of Mamdani and other democratic socialist candidates in various elections has been highlighted as a shift within the Democratic Party. Tuberville, a former football coach turned senator, is now the Republican nominee for governor in Alabama, a traditionally conservative state.
