Republicans and Democrats engaged in a heated debate on Capitol Hill regarding the direction of the Smithsonian Institution. The clash occurred during a Congressional hearing where Republicans accused the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History of ideological bias. In response, Democrats criticized the Trump administration for allegedly influencing historical scholarship.

Subcommittee Chairman Tim Burchett raised concerns about the museum’s shift towards what he termed a “woke ideology.” He highlighted a White House report that criticized the museum’s focus on race, gender, and other social issues. However, museum director Anthea Hartig defended the institution’s commitment to impartiality and scholarship.

The discussion at the hearing revolved around museum exhibits addressing topics like race, gender identity, and sexuality. Republican lawmakers questioned the appropriateness of certain exhibits for children. Meanwhile, Democratic members accused the administration of interfering with the museum’s independence and historical interpretation.

Witnesses from conservative organizations argued that the Smithsonian had veered away from its educational mission towards social activism. They called for a change in leadership to preserve what they described as America’s traditional historical narrative. In contrast, Democrats defended the museum’s inclusive approach and criticized attempts to alter or remove parts of American history.
