Siddhartha Majumdar, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) chairman, has resigned amid the BJP-led government’s takeover in West Bengal. The WBSSC faced scrutiny over a cash-for-school job scandal during the previous Trinamool Congress rule. Additionally, Ramanuj Gangopadhyay, the current president of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), and former president Kalyanmoy Gangopadhyay have also resigned in connection with the scandal.
The resignations came after the new state government terminated the tenures of various board members and chairpersons under different state government departments. Majumdar, who was appointed in 2022 and given an extension by the previous cabinet, has submitted his resignation after serving for over four years. Both Majumdar and Gangopadhyay’s resignations have been received by the State Education Secretary’s office.
Under the previous Trinamool Congress government, the State Education Department faced numerous corruption cases. Partha Chatterjee, the former Education Minister, was arrested in connection with the school job case and is currently on bail. The new BJP government aims to bring transparency to the education sector by taking actions in the department, according to a source familiar with the matter.
