The political competition for Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly by-election has intensified with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) naming Rekha Gupta as its candidate. This move follows Prashant Kishor’s announcement that he will personally contest the July 30 by-election. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the traditional holder of the Bankipur seat, is yet to reveal its candidate.
RJD State President Mangni Lal Mandal officially declared Rekha Gupta as the party’s choice for the Bankipur by-election, showing faith in her despite her previous defeat. Rekha Gupta, in response to her nomination, expressed confidence in the RJD’s victory this time. She urged Bankipur voters to support her, emphasizing a shift towards a female candidate after decades of BJP representation and citing public discontent with the BJP and the state government.
Rekha Gupta differentiated between a strategist and a politician in her comments on Prashant Kishor’s candidacy, highlighting the challenges of contesting an election personally. Despite her defeat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election by BJP’s Nitin Navin, the RJD has nominated her again, considering organizational factors and local politics. The RJD anticipates varied electoral dynamics in by-elections due to factors like voter engagement, local concerns, candidate interactions, and evolving political scenarios.
The Bankipur Assembly constituency in Bihar, a significant political battleground, is yet to see the BJP’s candidate announcement for the seat vacated by Nitin Navin. Bankipur, part of the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, is an urban area with a voter base comprising government employees, business owners, professionals, middle-class families, and youth. The BJP’s historical dominance in Bankipur adds intrigue to the upcoming by-election, which is expected to be closely watched beyond just the Assembly seat.
