Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa anticipates that IPL 2026 could mark the end of MS Dhoni’s tenure with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Uthappa suggests that Ruturaj Gaikwad should continue as captain instead of being replaced by Sanju Samson. Gaikwad, who has been leading the team since 2024, needs time to establish himself as captain without the shadow of Dhoni.
In Uthappa’s view, IPL 2026 might see Dhoni taking on a mentor-cum-player role, stepping back from a prominent batting position. Uthappa believes that this transition is essential for Gaikwad to flourish as a leader. He emphasizes the importance of allowing Gaikwad to develop and, if needed, having Samson as an alternative captain.
Uthappa also raises concerns about Sunrisers Hyderabad’s chances in the upcoming season. He questions their heavy reliance on aggressive batting, suggesting that a lack of strong bowling support could hinder their title aspirations. With key players like Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga facing injury concerns, Uthappa highlights the significance of a balanced bowling unit for success in the IPL.
