India’s Rohit Sharma made history by setting a new record for the most sixes as an opening batter in One Day International (ODI) cricket. During the first match of the ODI series against New Zealand, Rohit achieved this milestone while chasing a target of 301 runs at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium. He hit a total of 329 sixes as an opener, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous record of 328 maximums.

Rohit’s aggressive start saw him hitting the first maximum in the sixth over against Ben Foulkes, and he continued his momentum by sending Kyle Jamieson’s delivery for another six in the next over. Despite a promising start, Rohit was dismissed in the ninth over after scoring 26 runs off 29 balls, including three fours and two sixes.

Last year, Rohit had also broken Shahid Afridi’s record for the most sixes in ODI cricket during the South Africa series. With an impressive performance in 2021, Rohit scored 650 runs in 14 ODI innings, maintaining his position as the top batter in the ICC rankings.

In the match, India chose to field first after winning the toss. New Zealand’s openers, Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls, built a strong foundation with a 100-plus run partnership. However, India’s bowlers tightened their lines and picked up crucial wickets in the middle overs, preventing New Zealand from fully capitalizing on the solid start. Despite Daryl Mitchell’s efforts to stabilize the innings, New Zealand posted a total of 300 for eight in their 50 overs.
