Rubi Kumari Thakur, aged 26, has made history by being elected as the Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives. She represents the Shram Sanskriti Party and gained support from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and other political groups. Thakur’s election marks a significant generational shift in Nepalese politics.
In a voting session with 256 lawmakers present, Thakur secured an impressive 229 votes, while her competitor Saraswati Lama received only five votes. Notably, 22 lawmakers chose to abstain from voting. According to Nepal’s Constitution, one of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker positions must be held by a woman, and they must belong to different political parties.
Thakur, hailing from Mujeliya, Dhanusha district, was born in 2000 into a modest family background. Despite her humble beginnings, she pursued civil engineering studies after completing her Secondary Education Examination (SEE) and worked at an architecture consultancy firm to support her family financially. Her unexpected entry into politics was influenced by Hark Sampang’s political endeavors, leading to her active involvement in his party’s activities.
