Rekha Besra, residing in Jamtara, Jharkhand, is a prime example of how the Rashtriya Gramin Aajeevika Mission (NRLM) is empowering women towards self-reliance. Initially a farm laborer, Besra now thrives as a successful poultry entrepreneur, thanks to the program’s support.
Facing financial struggles in the past, Besra’s family situation improved after she joined a self-help group, underwent training, and secured a bank loan of Rs 1 lakh to kickstart her poultry business.
With close to 100 chickens today, Rekha’s poultry venture is flourishing, significantly boosting her family’s financial stability. She and her husband now jointly manage the farm, enhancing their children’s education and overall well-being.
Rekha’s husband, Lakheshwar Murmu, has also ventured into his own business, overseeing the farm operations and egg sales. Rekha’s eggs are highly sought after in the local market, ensuring steady sales.
In Jamtara district, numerous women like Rekha Besra are enhancing their incomes through self-employment avenues like poultry farming, goat rearing, and egg production under the Aajeevika Mission.
Empowering women economically, self-help groups offer training, access to bank loans, and market connections. The mission’s primary aim is to uplift rural women by facilitating self-employment, skill development, banking support, and marketing assistance.
Rekha Besra’s success story underscores how with the right guidance, training, and financial backing, rural women can uplift their families’ financial status and serve as inspirations to others. Through the Aajeevika Mission, many women in Jamtara are progressing towards becoming financially independent.
