Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to visit India to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi next month. The visit was confirmed by the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova during a media briefing in Moscow. Lavrov will engage in discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on various aspects of bilateral relations and the upcoming 18th BRICS summit scheduled for September in New Delhi.
Zakharova highlighted that the BRICS meeting in New Delhi will offer a platform for in-depth discussions on international issues, global governance improvements, and strengthening strategic partnerships among member states. Lavrov’s visit will not only involve his participation in the BRICS meeting but also encompass bilateral talks with Indian officials to enhance trade, economic, scientific, technical, and cultural cooperation between Russia and India.
Recently, Lavrov and Jaishankar had a telephonic conversation focusing on the West Asia conflict and the expansion of bilateral cooperation. The upcoming visit aims to further solidify ties between the two countries and prepare for high-level engagements in various sectors of mutual interest. India currently holds the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, emphasizing resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability as key themes under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision outlined during the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
The BRICS grouping, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was later expanded to include South Africa in 2010. The upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi is expected to foster collaboration and dialogue among member states, with a focus on addressing global challenges and promoting inclusive growth and development.
