Former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim has emphasized the need for Shreyas Iyer to carve out his own identity as India’s T20I captain. Karim highlighted that while Iyer showcased tactical prowess in the IPL, this aspect is yet to be seen in international matches. Following India’s loss to England in the fourth T20I, where the hosts secured an unassailable lead in the series, Karim expressed concerns over Iyer’s captaincy decisions.
Karim specifically questioned Iyer’s choices, such as the batting order during the Bristol defeat, indicating a departure from his IPL strategies. He pointed out instances like Shivam Dube coming in at number five, suggesting that in the IPL, a different player would have been selected. Karim stressed the significance of effective communication from the captain during critical game phases, noting that Iyer may need time to adapt to the role.
Despite his tactical reservations, Karim praised Iyer’s batting performance, citing it as a positive aspect that could enhance his leadership skills. Iyer’s impressive 80-run knock in the fourth T20I against England was lauded, although India’s total of 158 runs fell short as England chased it down comfortably. Karim expressed confidence in Iyer’s potential to excel as a captain, urging him to establish his unique leadership style and create a distinct identity on the field.
Karim also criticized India’s approach against England’s pace attack, highlighting a failure to adjust to English conditions. He emphasized the importance of understanding the opposition’s bowling strategies and adapting accordingly, noting that India seemed to struggle with this aspect. Karim underlined the need for India to assess conditions better and adjust their gameplay to match the challenges posed by different pitches and opponents.
