Sahith Theegala and Aaron Rai, friends with Indian heritage, kicked off their Zurich Classic journey in Avondale, Louisiana, with a steady performance. The duo, participating in the PGA Tour’s official team event, scored 10-under-par in the first round, placing them tied for 13th. Notably, both players showcased moments of brilliance by each contributing an eagle during the round.
Leading the tournament were Americans Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer, who set a high standard with a remarkable 14-under-par round, equaling the tournament record. Following closely were Davis Thompson and Austin Eckroat, finishing one shot behind after an impressive stretch that included an eagle and eight consecutive birdies. Sudarshan Yellamaraju, another player with Indian roots, paired with Ryan Gerard, secured a 7-under round, positioning them tied for 42nd place.
In contrast, Shane Lowry and Brooks Koepka faced challenges, posting a 6-under 66, placing them outside the top 40. The tournament will progress with alternating formats, transitioning back to four-ball play before concluding with the more demanding foursomes format. With more rounds ahead, Theegala and Rai aim to capitalize on their positive start and climb the rankings in this unique team event.
