Samajwadi Party leaders protested in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly premises, accusing the BJP of misleading the public on women’s reservation. The protest occurred before a special one-day session where the state government plans to move a censure motion against opposition parties for failing to pass the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha.
The SP legislators, holding banners demanding the implementation of 33 percent Women’s Reservation, demonstrated outside the Assembly. SP MLA Atul Pradhan criticized the ruling party, labeling their stance on the issue as deceptive.
In response to the protest, Uttar Pradesh Minister Danish Ansari accused opposition parties, including SP and the Indian National Congress, of betraying women. He highlighted that the Assembly session would focus on these actions and discuss strategies to enhance women’s empowerment.
Another Minister, Asim Arun, credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for introducing one-third reservation for women in legislatures. He condemned the SP for opposing the bill’s implementation, hindering women’s reservation in Parliament and Assemblies.
Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh also condemned the opposition for voting against women’s reservation, suggesting that these parties do not want ordinary women to become legislators based on merit.
Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar criticized the opposition for double standards, likening them to two-faced snakes. The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly recently supported women’s reservation post-delimitation, with Congress legislators urging immediate enforcement.
The special session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly aims to facilitate discussions on the implications of the Bill’s failure and reiterate the state government’s commitment to women’s empowerment. The proposed legislation sought to reserve 33 percent of seats for women in Parliament, but it lacked the required two-thirds majority for passage.
