The largest labor union at Samsung Electronics is pressing for 15% of the company’s operating profit to be allocated for employee performance-based bonuses without a payout cap. Choi Seung-ho, the union head, emphasized this demand before mediation talks to prevent an upcoming 18-day strike starting on May 21. The union insists on fair bonuses and the removal of payout restrictions to be formalized.
Choi Seung-ho stated that without a clear commitment from the company to institutionalize the bonus system, the mediation efforts might collapse. The discussions, which commenced on Monday and are set to run until Tuesday, are crucial for resolving the labor dispute. Samsung Electronics recently reported a significant increase in operating profit, driven by the demand for high-end memory chips.
The wage negotiations between Samsung Electronics’ management and the labor union have been ongoing since December. However, discussions stalled in March due to disagreements over performance-based bonuses. The potential strike at Samsung Electronics, a key player in the semiconductor industry, has sparked concerns about production disruptions and supply chain impacts, posing risks to the broader economy.
