The United States and India are on the verge of completing a long-awaited trade deal, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio, speaking at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, mentioned that both countries are eager to wrap up the negotiations in the coming weeks. He emphasized India’s significance as a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
Rubio’s recent visit to India also involved discussions with counterparts from the Quad, a coalition comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia. The Quad has been actively engaging in multiple meetings to enhance maritime cooperation and strategic dialogue in the Indo-Pacific. Rubio highlighted the shift towards tangible collaborations among the four nations, particularly in areas like domain awareness and maritime security.
During his visit, Rubio emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation in critical minerals and emerging technologies. He mentioned a recent Rare Earths ministerial meeting attended by over 30 countries, focusing on reducing dependence on China for essential minerals. Additionally, Rubio highlighted the “Pax Silica” initiative involving 14 countries to safeguard supply chains crucial for artificial intelligence development.
