Unionized workers at Samsung have agreed to restart discussions with management before a scheduled strike in May concerning bonuses. A joint board of three labor unions, including the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), revealed that management has shown readiness to address concerns such as removing the cap on performance-based bonuses. Following a working-level meeting on Wednesday, both parties will engage in comprehensive negotiations on Thursday and Friday.
The decision to resume talks follows a meeting between the joint union body and Vice Chairman and CEO Jun Young-hyun. Last week, the unions reported overwhelming support for the strike plan, with 93.1% of their members in favor. The collective demand from unionized workers includes the elimination of bonus caps, a 7% wage increase, and increased transparency in bonus calculations.
Previously, the workers had planned a press conference near Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s residence but canceled the event after management proposed a meeting with Jun. During discussions, the co-CEO acknowledged the workers’ concerns and committed to reviewing the union’s requests. Jun emphasized the need to explore various bonus distribution options among business units and expressed openness to further discussions if required.
